Wooden placards called “ema” in Japanese are available at every shrine or temple, and usually have a design that is unique to that shrine. (At Fushimi Inari, you can get them in the shape of red gates, or fox faces, like the picture above.) You are supposed to write a wish on the blank side, and apparently here, you are supposed to draw the fox a face – something I haven’t seen at a shrine before.
